A Panel Carved with the Promulgation of the Constitution
The main hall of Hachijo Hachiman Shrine, the guardian shrine of the former village of Hachijo on slightly raised ground west of the Naka River, is a one-bay nagare-zukuri hall of 1891 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
It has two-step bracket sets with four-step brackets under the veranda, and is covered in carving, starting with the dragons on the porch posts (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The highlight is the side panels, carved in relief from single boards with the promulgation of the Constitution of the Empire of Japan. The Agency notes that shrine carving on current events is rare and full of interest.
