Koike Tobacco Shop: A Gem of Early Showa Architecture in Chichibu

Standing proudly on the corner where Bamba-dori and Showa-dori intersect in the heart of Chichibu, Saitama Prefecture, Koike Tobacco Shop (小池煙草店, Koike Tabako-ten) is one of the most striking examples of early Showa-era commercial architecture in the Kanto region. Built in the early Showa period (late 1920s to early 1930s), this two-story wooden building was designated as a nationally Registered Tangible Cultural Property on February 17, 2004. Today, it has been thoughtfully renovated into a heritage boutique hotel and café, offering visitors a rare opportunity to not just admire but actually stay inside a piece of living history.

Historical Background

Koike Tobacco Shop was originally constructed as a combined shop and residence during the early Showa era, a period when Western architectural influences were being enthusiastically adopted across Japan. Situated along Bamba-dori — the traditional approach road (sandō) to the venerable Chichibu Shrine — the shop occupied a prime corner lot at the intersection with Showa-dori, a bustling commercial crossroads in central Chichibu.

At the time of its opening, the shop was reportedly designated as a model store by the Tokyo Monopoly Corporation (Senbai Kōsha), and photographs of its distinctive facade were widely circulated among related agencies as an example of ideal modern retail design. This recognition speaks to the building's significance as a showcase of progressive commercial architecture in a regional town that was prospering through its silk and textile industries.

The Chichibu region had long flourished as a center for sericulture and silk weaving. The local textile tradition known as Chichibu Meisen became a fashionable fabric for women's everyday and stylish clothing from the Taishō through early Showa periods. This economic prosperity is reflected in the many architecturally ambitious commercial buildings that still line the streets of central Chichibu today.

Architectural Features and Cultural Value

Koike Tobacco Shop is a wooden two-story structure with a sheet-metal roof covering a building area of 61 square meters. The building's most distinctive architectural feature is how it addresses its corner site: the street-facing walls are raised high to conceal a single-slope (katanagare) iron-sheet roof behind them, creating a false facade that gives the impression of a grander, taller building from the street.

The corner of the building is gracefully rounded into a continuous curved wall surface, where the original tobacco sales counter was positioned — creating a welcoming focal point for the shop. The exterior mortar walls are divided into distinct zones through careful use of color and surface finish. The upper portion features an elegant cornice running along the top, with leaf-patterned (acanthus) moldings adding classical Western ornamentation. The window surrounds on the second floor are framed with decorative trim, giving the entire facade a richly ornamental character.

The building was registered as a Tangible Cultural Property under the criterion of being an outstanding example of design (造形の規範となっているもの). It represents a valuable case study of the diverse architectural expressions that emerged during the early Showa period, when Japanese builders were creatively integrating Western decorative vocabularies — cornices, moldings, and classical ornamental motifs — into traditional wooden construction for commercial purposes.

Most of the original front fittings remain intact, including the entrance door and sales counter on the first floor and the decoratively framed second-floor windows. The vintage patterned glass (Showa-era itaita glass) in some windows is especially prized by architectural enthusiasts as an increasingly rare survival from the period.

Renovation and New Life as NIPPONIA Chichibu Monzen-machi

In August 2022, Koike Tobacco Shop began a remarkable new chapter when it was renovated as part of NIPPONIA Chichibu Monzen-machi, a dispersed heritage hotel project. The NIPPONIA concept, which operates across Japan from Hokkaido to Okinawa, transforms historically significant buildings into boutique accommodation while preserving their architectural character and cultural significance.

The Koike Tobacco Shop building, together with the adjacent former Miyatani Shoe Shop, was converted into the KOIKE-MIYATANI Wing, offering three guest rooms and a café. The first floor houses Koike Café, where the original tobacco sales counter has been preserved as a distinctive interior feature. The second floor contains a guest room that retains original elements such as the traditional tokonoma alcove, vintage glass windows, and atmospheric period details. The room interiors blend Taishō-era romance with Showa-era retro charm, featuring red carpet and traditional furnishings alongside modern amenities including cypress (hinoki) wood bathtubs.

A separate building, the MARUJU Wing, was created from the former Maru-Jū Pharmacy (built from the Meiji through early Showa periods), providing five additional guest rooms and the Restaurant MARUJU, which serves creative French cuisine highlighting locally sourced Chichibu ingredients including seasonal wild game (gibier).

In 2025, the first-floor café was further renovated and relaunched as Koike Café, offering Japanese-style sweets made with Saitama-grown soybean flour (kinako) and organic ingredients from the Chichibu region, along with light meals and beverages in a warm retro setting.
