The Otani Family Residence Western-Style House
The Otani Family Residence Western-Style House (大谷家住宅洋館, Ōtani-ke Jūtaku Yōkan) is a two-story timber villa in Inaricho, Fukaya City, Saitama Prefecture, built in 1931 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2004.
It is attached to the south gable of the Main House. The roof is a half-hipped gable covered in Spanish tiles, the walls are finished in washed artificial stone (Araidashi), and the upper walls are treated in a half-timbered manner. Tall, narrow windows hold stained glass.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records the structure as wooden, 2 storeys with a single-storey section, with a building area of 22 square metres.
Why the Western-Style House Was Registered
The agency describes it as an elegant Western house composed in the Jugendstil manner, the German-speaking world's version of Art Nouveau, and notes that the interior survives in good condition. It was registered as a building that sets a standard for design.
Attaching a Western wing to a Japanese house was common in Japanese mansions of the period. What sets the Otani Family Residence Western-Style House apart is the choice of Jugendstil, with its curves and ornament, placed directly against a restrained sukiya-style main house. The contrast is the point.
What to Look For
Look up from the old Nakasendo and the first things you see over the wall are a green roof and arched window heads. The 2014 newsletter profile opens with exactly that view.
According to that article, the ground floor is a reception room with parquet flooring, a coffered ceiling partly finished in woven wood, and a chandelier hanging from decorative plaster. A portrait of the builder, Otani Fujitoyo, is said to hang here. Upstairs are two Western rooms where the stained glass is at its best.
A 2016 feature adds that the furniture and light fittings are still the originals. Finding the fittings of an early Showa reception room intact, rather than just its shell, is unusual.
Visiting the Western-Style House
The interior of the Otani Family Residence Western-Style House is not open to the public; a visit means viewing the exterior from the street.
Of the nine registered buildings, this is the one you can see most easily. Stand on the old Nakasendo in front of the Middle Gate and the roof and upper windows appear above the wall. Keep photo stops short, and don't keep a lens trained on the windows of a family home.
