The Otani Family Residence Main House
The Otani Family Residence Main House (大谷家住宅主屋, Ōtani-ke Jūtaku Shuoku) is a sukiya-style home in Inaricho, Fukaya City, Saitama Prefecture, built in 1931 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2004.
This is the core of the estate: a timber house with a two-story south wing, its ridge running north to south, joined to a single-story north wing whose ridge runs east to west. The entrance is in the south wing. It covers 286 square metres under a pantile roof, with copper sheeting on the smaller eaves.
The Western-Style House is attached to the south gable end, and the Main Storehouse connects to the north wing by a corridor. From outside, the building reads as a conventional Japanese residence. Inside, colored glass turns up where you least expect it.
Why the Main House Was Registered
The Agency for Cultural Affairs points to three things: timber of high quality, stained glass placed at key points, and precise workmanship that runs from the carpentry down to the sliding doors. It was registered as a building that sets a standard for design.
The Otani Family Residence Main House was an otasuke fushin, a relief project that kept local craftsmen employed through the early Showa depression. The finish of the house is usually read in that light: people given long, secure work had every reason to show what they could do.
What to Look For
A 2014 newsletter profile walks through the interior, and the surprises begin at the front door. Facing the step up is a Tokonoma alcove whose back wall is a Japanese-style stained-glass panel of pine and cranes, lit from behind.
The shoji beside it use frames that clamp the paper from both sides, an unusual detail. A carved zelkova staircase leads upstairs, where three tatami rooms each have their own alcove and transom carvings pitched at a different level of formality.
Farther back on the ground floor are the dining room, a powder room, the bath and the family's living rooms facing the garden. The powder-room ceiling carries a cracked-ice pattern; the bathroom makes do with plain colored glass.
The same article credits the glass designs to Meiseisha and the fabrication to the Beppu Stained Glass Works (別府スティンド硝子製作所). Zelkova, cedar, paulownia and persimmon wood all appear, so the joinery repays a slow look.
Visiting the Main House
The Otani Family Residence Main House is a private home and its interior is closed to visitors, so the rooms described above cannot currently be seen in person.
