What the Akada Family Residence Main Gate Is
The Akada Family Residence Main Gate (赤田家住宅正門, Akada-ke Jūtaku Seimon) is a late Edo-period thatched gateway of the Yakuimon type in Otamachi, Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture, entered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 6 August 2025. It is 2.3 metres wide, flanked by short Sodobei wing walls, and is the oldest of the five Akada family buildings on the register.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs dates it to the late Edo period and gives a span of 1751 to 1830. No construction date appears to be recorded, so the range presumably rests on the gate's form and carpentry.
The gate stands directly in front of the main house and faces south. Its gable roof is thatched in Kayabuki fashion, the wing walls on either side carry Sangawara-buki tiles, and on the east side a small Kugurido wicket lets people duck through without opening the main doors.
Why It Was Listed
The Akada Family Residence Main Gate was listed for its contribution to the historic landscape, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs pins that contribution on its thatched roof, which helps give the district its historic character.
A yakuimon is a gate with two main posts carrying the doors and a pair of rear posts behind them, all under a gable roof. Here a beam is laid across the tie beam that links the heads of the main posts, and the tip of that beam carries the eave purlin, so the weight of the roof comes down on the beam ends. It is a textbook reading of how this type of gate works. Under the eaves, the rafters are round logs rather than squared timber.
The underside of the gate is ceiled, and the opening is closed by a pair of hinged plank doors. Walk beneath it and you pass under a finished ceiling, not open rafters.
With tiled walls on either hand, the gate itself wears thatch. Putting the roof of an ordinary village farmhouse on the formal entrance is what gives the Akada street front its particular character.
What to Look For
Start with the contrast of thatch and tile at the Akada Family Residence Main Gate. The deep, soft gable of thatch sits in the centre; the thin, crisp tiled roofs of the wing walls run out to either side. The difference in material sharpens the symmetry of the whole composition.
Then look up under the eaves. The Agency publishes a photograph taken from the south that shows the beam resting on the tie beam, its tip carrying the eave purlin, and the log rafters above. Round-log rafters are a common sight under thatched eaves.
Finally, note the wicket on the east side. It let the household come and go without swinging open the double doors, and it was most likely the everyday way in.
Visiting
The Akada Family Residence Main Gate belongs to a private home, and visitors cannot pass through it onto the property. Neither the Agency for Cultural Affairs nor Nagahama City lists any opening days or booking route (checked 27 September 2026).
Together with the storage shed beside it, the gate forms the street front of the estate, which makes it the easiest of the five buildings to see from outside. Because it faces south, the view from the south takes in the thatched roof and both wing walls at once. Photograph from the public road, keep your stop in front of the gate brief, and do not peer inside.
