A Muromachi Shrine Hall beside Enkoji

The Daigyoji Shrine Main Hall (大行事神社本殿) is the sanctuary of Daigyoji Shrine next to Enkoji at Kunobe, Yasu City, Shiga Prefecture, a one-bay nagare-style hall rebuilt in the mid-Muromachi period (1393 to 1466), and was designated an Important Cultural Property on June 9, 1943 (Agency for Cultural Affairs, Shiga Cultural Heritage Protection Association).

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a one-bay nagare-style shrine with a cypress-bark roof, owned by Daigyoji Shrine.

The Guardian Shrine of Enkoji

According to the Shiga Cultural Heritage Protection Association, Daigyoji Shrine is said to have begun as the guardian shrine of Enkoji and enshrines Takamimusubi no Kami. Its main hall was rebuilt in the mid-Muromachi period.

Next door, Enkoji has a main hall dated to 1257 and a Kamakura stone pagoda, so that with the Daigyoji Shrine Main Hall three Important Cultural Properties stand side by side (Shiga Cultural Heritage Protection Association).

Value as an Important Cultural Property

The Daigyoji Shrine Main Hall was designated an Important Cultural Property in 1943. The association notes that although small for a one-bay shrine, it is well preserved and elegant.

What to Look For

Its one-bay nagare form, with the cypress-bark roof sweeping forward, gives it a light, graceful look (Agency for Cultural Affairs, Shiga Cultural Heritage Protection Association).

The association suggests comparing the Daigyoji Shrine Main Hall with the main hall of Komiya Shrine, a subsidiary shrine of Inari Shrine at Shinohara in Yasu, which dates from about the same time.
