The Koizumi Family Residence New Zashiki Wing

The Koizumi Family Residence New Zashiki Wing (小泉家住宅新座敷棟, Koizumi-ke Jūtaku Shin-zashiki-tō) is a single-storey timber reception wing of the Taisho era (1912 to 1926) on the Koizumi estate in Gokasho Yamamoto-cho, Higashiomi City, Shiga Prefecture; it was altered in the early Showa years and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2015.

It stands toward the south end of the estate's east side and connects at its north end to the older zashiki wing. It covers 62 square meters under a tiled roof hipped-and-gabled (irimoya) at the south end and plain gabled at the north, with a wall attached on the south.

Why the New Zashiki Wing Was Registered

For the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the Koizumi Family Residence New Zashiki Wing shows how the estate kept expanding in the modern era. One set of reception rooms from the 1860s was no longer enough, so in the Taisho years the family added a second.

The original rooms are an eight-mat room to the south and a six-mat room to the north. The board-floored itanoma between the wing and the Tatsumi storehouse was added later.

What to Look For in the New Zashiki Wing

The eight-mat room of the Koizumi Family Residence New Zashiki Wing has a fumikomi-doko, an alcove laid flush with the tatami instead of raised on a lacquered sill, and a projecting tsuke-shoin desk window beside it. The flush alcove gives the room a lighter, more modern feel than the older wing next door.

The roof tells the same story from outside. Only the south end, facing the garden, is given the more dignified irimoya form, while the end that meets the older wing is left as a simple gable.

Seeing the Koizumi New Zashiki Wing

The Koizumi Family Residence New Zashiki Wing stands inside the wall on the southeast of the grounds and is not open to visitors. Little of it can be seen from the road. Visiting notes are on the Koizumi Family Residence page.
