The Koizumi Family Residence Large Storehouse

The Koizumi Family Residence Large Storehouse (小泉家住宅大土蔵, Koizumi-ke Jūtaku Ōdozō) is a two-storey plastered storehouse of the late Edo period (1830 to 1868) north of the Western-style house on the Koizumi estate in Gokasho Yamamoto-cho, Higashiomi City, Shiga Prefecture; renovated in about 1938, it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2015.

It runs east to west under a gabled roof of pantiles, six bays by two and a half, with a building area of 72 square meters. A connecting passage and a wall are registered with it.

Why the Large Storehouse Was Registered

The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes the Koizumi Family Residence Large Storehouse as a solid, weighty storehouse that shapes the northwest corner of the estate, alongside the rice storehouse in the corner itself.

As the name says, it is among the biggest storehouses on the property. The Bunko storehouse has the same dimensions but was new in 1909; this one is late Edo, so two large storehouses of different generations share the north side of the estate.

What to Look For at the Large Storehouse

Look first at the windows of the Koizumi Family Residence Large Storehouse. Each carries a small hood painted with bengara, a red iron-oxide pigment, and the red hoods stand out against the white plaster.

A broad hachimaki band of plaster crowns the walls and boat planks cover their base, framing the building top and bottom and giving it its heavy look. The door is at the east end of the south side, fronted by a covered corridor, and a connecting passage links it to the rest of the compound.

Seeing the Large Storehouse

The Koizumi Family Residence Large Storehouse is on private property and not open. It stands in the northwest part of the estate, but we could not confirm how much can be seen from the road. Visiting notes are on the Koizumi Family Residence page.
