The Koizumi Family Residence Rear Gate and Wall
The Koizumi Family Residence Rear Gate and Wall (小泉家住宅裏門及び塀, Koizumi-ke Jūtaku Uramon oyobi Hei) is the gate and wall of 1938 enclosing the southern half of the west side of the Koizumi estate in Gokasho Yamamoto-cho, Higashiomi City, Shiga Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2015.
The rear gate, a little south of the middle of the west side, is a one-bay udegi-mon 2.4 meters wide with a gabled pantile roof. The wall runs north and south from it for a total of 22 meters.
The period field in the Agency's database reads Meiji, but both its date field and its Western-calendar field give 1938. This article follows the date field.
Why the Rear Gate and Wall Were Registered
The Agency for Cultural Affairs praises the careful workmanship of the Koizumi Family Residence Rear Gate and Wall, with its timber painted in red bengara, and says it gives the back of the estate a well-ordered appearance.
It is the youngest of the fourteen registered structures. Around 1938 the large storehouse, the rice storehouse, the Western-style house and the front gate were also renovated, and the rear of the property was given a new face as part of that last major campaign.
What to Look For at the Rear Gate and Wall
Look at the top of the wall of the Koizumi Family Residence Rear Gate and Wall. A band of horizontal lattice runs along it like an open frieze, lightening the stack of white plaster and boat-plank base below.
The posts and lattice are painted red with bengara, and the gate, with its own gabled tile roof, is treated as one design with the wall.
Seeing the Rear Gate and Wall
The Koizumi Family Residence Rear Gate and Wall lines the west edge of the estate, so part of it may be visible from the road. Everything inside is private and cannot be entered. Please look from the road only.
