A stage in the southwest corner
Kojinyama Shrine Kagura Hall (荒神山神社神楽殿, Kōjinyama Jinja Kaguraden) is the sacred dance hall at the southwest corner of the summit precinct in Kiyosakicho, Hikone City, Shiga Prefecture, built in 1928 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2017.
It faces east, away from the line of halls that the rest of the precinct forms.
The hall runs three bays by three, Irimoya-zukuri under pantiles, single storey, covering 41 square metres. It is the only building of the Showa era among the six registered structures at the shrine, and the only one that stands clear of the row of halls.
Kagura is the dance and music offered to the deities. The main hall and its neighbours had been in place since the 1890s; some thirty years later the shrine added a building where that offering could be performed, and the precinct reached the shape it has now.
Stage in front, dressing room behind
Kojinyama Shrine Kagura Hall holds registration number 25-0396, listed as a structure contributing to the historic character of the national landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls it well preserved and indispensable to the shrine's ceremonies.
The plan splits front from back. The two front bays form the stage, closed on the front and sides by half-shutters that are thrown open for ceremonies. The rear bay is the dressing room, divided from the stage by sliding plank doors, and its back wall is Shikkui plaster except for the central bay, which serves as the entrance.
One half opens, the other half shuts, and you can read that from outside. Come round to the front and the building is a screen of movable joinery; go behind it and the same building is a blank white wall. The line between performing and preparing is drawn in how the walls are built.
The days the shutters go up
Because Kojinyama Shrine Kagura Hall faces east, morning light falls straight onto the stage. On ordinary days the shutters are down and the hall is closed; open is a condition reserved for ceremonies.
The shrine's great festival falls on 29 and 30 June. Over those two days small children, up to about three years old, offer kagura in a rite believed to protect them from fire for life, and the precinct is busier than at any other time of year.
The interior is not open to visitors, so the hall is seen from the gravel of the precinct. Look at the height of the stage floor, then the hooks that hold the shutters up, then the position of the sliding doors to the dressing room, and the way the building works becomes easy to picture.
