The face the shrine turns to visitors
Kojinyama Shrine Worship Hall (荒神山神社拝殿, Kōjinyama Jinja Haiden) is the hall where visitors pray at the summit precinct in Kiyosakicho, Hikone City, Shiga Prefecture, built in 1895 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2017.
It measures three bays by three, Irimoya-zukuri under pantiles, with a one-bay canopy projecting at the front under its own gable. A veranda runs along the front and both sides. At 44 square metres it is the largest of the six registered structures at the shrine.
Behind it, a short connecting hall runs back to the main hall; on its east veranda the offering hall is attached. Kojinyama Shrine Worship Hall is the hinge of that arrangement rather than a free-standing building.
Walls that open, walls that do not
The registration number is 25-0393 and the criterion is the one used for all six structures here, contribution to the historic character of the national landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs credits the graceful front canopy with setting the tone of the whole complex.
The joinery repays attention. Only the central bay at the front and the central bay at the back carry folding panelled doors, and those are the routes used by people and by offerings. Every other bay is filled with half-shutters, hinged at the top so the upper leaf swings outward and hooks up. Raised, the hall opens to the precinct; lowered, it closes into a box. The building has two faces, one for festival days and one for ordinary ones.
Above the pillars there is a single boat-shaped bracket, no stacked bracket set, and the gable is filled with a lattice of slats. Kojinyama Shrine Worship Hall gets its effect by leaving things out, which is what makes the projecting canopy and the roofline read so clearly.
Where the grass ring stands
The space in front of Kojinyama Shrine Worship Hall is both the place to pray and, once a year, the setting for a rite. During the Minazuki festival on 29 and 30 June a large ring of woven grass is set up here, and visitors pass through it on both days.
Look first from directly in front, up at the gable of the canopy: a small hipped-and-gabled roof set against the larger one behind it, turned to face the approach. Then drop your eyes to veranda height and follow the line of shutters across the facade to see which bays open and which do not.
