A Great Japanese-Style Esoteric Hall
The Kongorinji Temple Main Hall (金剛輪寺本堂) is the medieval main hall of Kongorinji at Matsuoji, Aisho Town, Echi District, Shiga Prefecture, which in 1952 was designated a National Treasure.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a single-storey hip-and-gable hall seven bays square with a cypress-bark roof, designated with the shrine cabinet on its altar.
The Agency notes that an inscription on the altar fittings has been taken to date it to 1288, but its style suggests it may be as late as the early Muromachi period.
Structure
According to the Agency, it has Japanese-style bracketing, a large scale and heavy timbers, with top-hinged shutters across all seven front bays.
Inside, as usual in esoteric halls, it is divided into inner and outer sanctuaries, both with board floors; the outer has rainbow beams and a ceiling, the inner an exposed roof structure. The style is almost entirely Japanese, with some Zen-style elements such as fist-shaped beam ends in the inner sanctuary.
What to Look For
The temple says it was built by Sasaki Yoritsuna, governor of Omi, to celebrate victory over the Mongol invasions. The Agency notes the inscribed altar in the inner sanctuary, with a shrine cabinet on it thought to date from the early Muromachi period.
The temple adds that the abbot's quick thinking saved it from Oda Nobunaga's forces.
