A Rare Hip-and-Gable Shrine Hall

The Mikami Shrine Main Hall (御上神社本殿) is the late Kamakura main hall of Mikami Shrine in Mikami, Yasu City, Shiga Prefecture, which in 1952 was designated a National Treasure.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a single-storey hip-and-gable hall three bays square with a one-bay porch and cypress-bark roof.

The Agency notes that the shrine, at the western foot of Mount Mikami in the Yasu River basin, is listed in the Engishiki as a major shrine.

Form

According to the Agency, it is a relatively simple hip-and-gable building three bays square, with boat-shaped bracket arms only at the corners.

Its style points to the Kamakura period.

What to Look For

The Agency notes that it is among the older surviving shrine buildings and that a hip-and-gable shrine hall is relatively rare, giving it deep cultural-historical significance.

With the worship hall, gate and Wakamiya shrine, it preserves the look of a fourteenth-century shrine precinct.
