A Front of Lattices and Glass
The Nakano Family Residence Main House at 1-209 Chuo is a two-storey townhouse facing the street to the west, under a gabled pantile roof (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
From the north end, its ground-floor front runs from a large door with a small wicket door set into it, to a lattice, to a projecting lattice window (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Upstairs, the end bays are plastered and the bays between them are glazed. The eaves are carried on projecting beams, a style known as dashigeta-zukuri.
Why It Was Registered
The Agency registered the Nakano Family Residence Main House (Adjoining House) for its contribution to the historic landscape, noting that it forms part of the streetscape together with its Nakano neighbour. Its latticed ground floor and glazed upper floor show how townhouse fronts looked between the late Meiji and early Showa years.
What to Look For
From the street, read the sequence of large door, lattice and projecting lattice on the ground floor, and the plaster and glass of the floor above (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Seen beside the Nakano main house at 1-208 Chuo, with its granite facing and insect-cage windows, the difference between the two generations of townhouse front is easy to follow.
