A large everyday gate of low-arched form
On the west side of the Daishi-den, raised on a stone platform, stands the everyday gate of the Sōso Daishi-den. It is a hira-karamon of one bay with a single doorway, flanked by mud-plaster walls that bend as they extend. Beyond its three-meter frontage it carries three meters of wing wall and forty-three meters of flanking wall. It was set up while the Daishi-den precinct was being arranged during the Taishō period.
Against the ornate gate that dignifies the front, this is the gate for daily passage. Its role is modest, but its scale is if anything larger, giving it the bearing to close the flank of the hall.
A bold frog-leg strut on the ridge line
The roof is laid in cypress bark, and the eaves use widely spaced rafters. Being an everyday gate, the whole is kept plain, with little in the way of showy carving. The core of its design is instead a bold frog-leg strut set on the ridge line, which lends a firm accent to the front of an otherwise simple gate.
Paring back ornament and relying on the size and placement of its members, the gate reflects a different sense of beauty from the carved gate at the front. Rather than competing in display, it keeps the dignity of a working gate. It was listed on August 28, 2001.
Read through contrast with the Karamon
In the Daishi-den precinct, the ornate front gate and the western everyday gate make a fine pair of opposites. The Karamon lavished with carving, the everyday gate showing itself through a single strut. Seen one after the other, they bring out a design that draws the line between rank and use through form alone.
