A carved gate before the founder's hall
Facing east before the Daishi-den, the hall dedicated to Shinsei Shōnin, stands an ornate gate: the Karamon of the Sōso Daishi-den. It is a four-legged gate of one bay with a single doorway, flanked by mud-plaster walls that bend as they run outward. With a 4.2-meter frontage, three meters of wing wall, and thirty-eight meters of flanking wall, it serves as the formal gate enclosing the forecourt of the hall. It was built in 1917.
The roof is laid in cypress bark, with curved gable canopies projecting front and back from a hip-and-gable form. The contrast between the softly curving bark roof and the arched canopies above it sets the gate's first impression.
Dragons and lions on the beam
The bracketing is kept plain, in simple three-piece sets, yet the carving is lavish. Above the arched beam, dragons and lions are cut in relief; the transoms combine carved panels with plain boards, and the metal fittings are worked with fine precision. Dense carving laid over a simple frame gives the gate the bright ornamental character of the Taishō period.
The eye of anyone passing through is drawn upward to the carving on the beam. Dragons and lions were chosen as guardians of the temple gate, lending the entrance to the founder's precinct a fitting sense of rank. It became a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on August 28, 2001.
Comparing three gates
Besides this Karamon, the Daishi-den precinct holds an everyday gate on the west and a water pavilion. Where the Karamon is the ornate gate that dignifies the front, the everyday gate is a plain one for daily passage, and the gap in their design is clear. Seen in sequence, they reveal how a single Taishō-era program varied its building to suit each use.
It is worth pausing to look up at the carving and the metalwork. Among the buildings of Saikyō-ji, this gate stands out for the sheer density of its ornament.
