A Thatched Muromachi Gate in Koka
The Shingu Shrine Front Gate (Koka) (新宮神社表門) is a thatched gate on the approach to Shingu Shrine at Shinji, Konan-cho, Koka City, Shiga Prefecture, dated by an ink inscription to 1485 in the late Muromachi period, and was designated an Important Cultural Property on April 15, 1924 (Agency for Cultural Affairs, Japan Heritage Portal).
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a three-bay, single-passage romon gate lacking its upper storey, with a hipped thatched roof, owned by Shingu Shrine. It is also a component of the Japan Heritage story "Ninja Hometown: Iga and Koka" (Japan Heritage Portal).
A Leading Shrine of the Soma Estate
According to the Japan Heritage Portal, Shingu Shrine was one of the "Soma Three Shrines", leading shrines of the medieval Soma estate. Several medieval fort sites nearby, such as Shingu Castle, belong to the Koka Gunchuso fort sites, suggesting that the area was a centre of the Koka warrior bands.
The Biwako Visitors Bureau describes it as an old shrine south of JR Konan Station, with the front gate, main sanctuary, worship hall and kagura hall along its approach.
Value as an Important Cultural Property
The Shingu Shrine Front Gate (Koka) was designated an Important Cultural Property in 1924. The Japan Heritage Portal notes that the carved bracket ends of the head tie beams and the frog-leg strut in the central bay show the character of the period, and that the gate has come down without major alteration since it was built.
What to Look For
The Koka tourism association says the gate is known locally as the Shinji Romon. It was meant to be a two-storey gate, but work on the upper storey seems to have stopped for some reason; the Agency for Cultural Affairs likewise records it as a romon lacking its upper storey.
The Shingu Shrine Front Gate (Koka) was dismantled and repaired in 1960 and rethatched in 1986. A conservation project completed in 2019 renewed the thatch and the white plaster walls, restoring it to a state worthy of its original construction (Japan Heritage Portal). In season the road to the gate is lined with cherry blossoms (Koka tourism association).
Visiting
The Shingu Shrine Front Gate (Koka) stands at Shinji, Konan-cho, Koka City, and no reservation is needed to visit (Biwako Visitors Bureau). It is about 4 minutes by car from Konan Station on the JR Kusatsu Line and a short drive from the Konan interchange of the Shin-Meishin Expressway, with space for about two cars nearby (Biwako Visitors Bureau, Koka tourism association).
