Kikutake's Second Museum Building in Matsue

The Former Shimane Prefectural Museum Annex (Shimane Prefectural Government Third Annex) (旧島根県立博物館新館(島根県庁第三分庁舎)) is a museum annex designed by Kikutake Kiyonori of 1969 in Tonomachi, Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on June 24, 2021 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a three-storey reinforced concrete building with a building area of 350 square metres; registration number 32-0210.

Storage Lifted above the Galleries

The former museum annex, designed by Kikutake Kiyonori, is a three-storey reinforced concrete building (Agency for Cultural Affairs). As in his main museum building, the storage is lifted to the upper floor, with open galleries below.

The lower part is left in exposed concrete and the upper part is finished in white cement (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The many wall-columns and the beams spanning wide openings show the architect's design clearly.

Why It Was Registered

The Agency notes that the wall-columns and long-span beams show the architect's design clearly, and registered it as a model of design.

What to Look For

Look for the contrast of exposed concrete below and white cement above, and the long-span beams (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Visiting

It is owned by Shimane Prefecture (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The prefecture asks visitors to speak to the reception desk or office first, and to photograph only with permission and without showing other users; visits may be declined depending on use. The four buildings are introduced together on the Shimane Prefectural Government Buildings page.
