Genmyoji Temple

Genmyoji Temple (玄妙寺) in Mitsuke, Iwata City, Shizuoka Prefecture, has two structures registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on December 19, 2014: a concrete sutra repository of 1934 and gateposts and a wall of the early Showa period (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Both are owned by the temple.

The Two Structures

The sutra repository, in the south-east corner of the precinct, is a small concrete store finished in artificial stone scored to look like masonry, a fine prewar example built to resist fire (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The gateposts and wall along the west side are built of hollow blocks moulded from tamped earth, with caps and coping of the same material, a rare record of local plastering skills (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Concrete and tamped earth, two early Showa experiments in material, survive side by side. Each structure is described on its own page.
