What the Shōdō Is
Joined to the north face of the Founder’s Hall stands a small hall, the Shōdō of Hōkō-ji. It is a votive hall for enshrining the temple’s founder: a single-story timber building with a copper-plate roof and a floor area of 24 square metres, two bays square with a pyramidal roof, an entrance opening at the centre of the front.
It is thought to date from the middle Meiji period, roughly 1883 to 1897. Inside is a single room with a coffered ceiling and an altar at the rear. Together with the Founder’s Hall it forms the central space devoted to Mumon Gensen, the founding master.
Honouring the Founder Mumon Gensen
Hōkō-ji’s founder was the Zen master Mumon Gensen, held to be a son of Emperor Go-Daigo. For a temple opened in 1371, a hall for venerating the founder lies at the heart of its faith. The Shōdō stands close beside the Founder’s Hall and supports that place of prayer.
Value as a Finely Made Votive Hall
The Shōdō was registered as a national Tangible Cultural Property (Structure) on 10 September 2019, registration number 22-270. Its listing cites the criterion of being a model of design.
Small though it is, its design is careful. Two-stepped bracket clusters with tail rafters are set in a packed arrangement, block-and-strut elements are added between them, and the beams and bracket arms carry finely carved patterns. The density of ornament gives it a quality worthy of a hall for the founder.
The pyramidal roof clad in copper plate also signals the hall’s standing. In a precinct where tiled roofs prevail, the choice of copper reflects the special place of this votive hall.
Examining the Carving Up Close
Because the Shōdō is small, its detailed work can be studied at close range. Follow the packed bracketing, the seating of the block-and-strut, and the lines carved into the beams and bracket arms, and the depth of the craftsman’s labour on this hall comes through.
Looking in through the central front entrance, you can see the orderly grid of the coffered ceiling and the composed altar at the rear. As a space for venerating the founder, it balances simplicity with care.
The Founder’s Hall and the Shōdō are joined as one. Viewing them with their relationship in mind shows how the space devoted to the founder is composed within the precinct. Seen together with the imperial-envoy gate before the Founder’s Hall, the reach of this space of reverence becomes clear.
