What the Hokoji Temple Kannon Hall is

The Hokoji Temple Kannon Hall (方広寺観音堂), at Hokoji in the Okuyama district of Inasa-cho, Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, was built in the middle Meiji years and entered the national register as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 10 September 2019. It faces south from a site immediately west of the Main Hall and houses an image of Kannon.

The building is single-storey timber with a pantiled roof and a floor area of 17 square metres, which makes it the second smallest of the twenty-two registered buildings at Hokoji. It is one bay wide at the front and two bays on the sides and rear, under a pyramidal roof.

A roof that falls evenly on four sides

A pyramidal roof has no ridge. Its surfaces drop at equal pitch from a single apex, a form suited to small halls on near-square plans, and one that presents the same silhouette from every direction.

Why the Hokoji Temple Kannon Hall was registered

The criterion is contribution to the historic landscape of the country, and the registration number is 22-268.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs record praises a small building whose balanced exterior tightens the look of the precinct. What is valued is neither scale nor quantity of ornament but proportion. The front half of each side wall steps outward, and a veranda of cut-end boarding runs across the front with a balustrade topped by bronze finials. Giving a veranda and a balustrade to a hall of 17 square metres is what keeps its standing as a Buddhist hall intact.

The Main Hall stands just to the east. Holding its own outline beside a building of 735 square metres is precisely the work this small hall does.

What to look for at the Hokoji Temple Kannon Hall

Begin with the finials on the veranda rail. These bulbous bronze caps sit on the balustrade posts and are borrowed from bridges and shrine verandas. On a hall this size each one looks larger than its actual dimension.

The projections on the front half of the side walls pull the plan away from a plain rectangle. Seen from the front they introduce a step in the outline, and together with the four-sided pitch of the roof they deepen the play of shadow.

Inside, the Hokoji Temple Kannon Hall is a single room under a batten ceiling, with an altar at the back holding the image of Kannon. A batten ceiling, where slim strips carry the boards, is the plain choice that suits the scale of the hall.

Visiting the Hokoji Temple Kannon Hall

Visitors cannot step up into the Hokoji Temple Kannon Hall. Viewing is from the outside, with a look into the interior from the front.

It lies a few dozen paces west of the Main Hall forecourt, so it fits naturally into a visit to the larger building. From directly in front, the relation between roof, veranda and balustrade can be taken in at once. Set beside the Founder's Hall next door, the difference between pantiles and heavy round-and-flat tiles, and between a pyramidal and a hipped-and-gabled roof, becomes easy to read.

Photography is unrestricted. Directions and admission are covered on the Hokoji Temple page.
