Sagisaka Family Residence (Tsuruya Honten)

The Sagisaka Family Residence (Tsuruya Honten) (匂阪家住宅(鶴屋本店)) in the old Mitsuke post town, Iwata City, Shizuoka Prefecture, is the home of a family of miso and soy sauce makers, whose retirement house of 1923 and storehouse of 1917 were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on March 6, 2024 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Two Buildings

The retirement house, facing east onto the old post road, has suites of formal rooms on both floors with refined touches such as a lattice window in the shoin alcove (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The storehouse, joined to its north side, is a three-storey plastered store on coursed Izu stone, with two drip courses and paired plaster doors, adding to the townscape of the post town (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Together they show how a Taisho-era brewing family lived. Each building is described on its own page.
