Kadoya Ryokan

Kadoya Ryokan (加登屋旅館) in Itamuro, Nasushiobara City, Tochigi Prefecture, is a long-established inn of Itamuro Onsen whose main building of about 1919, annex of about 1937 and Yusenkaku of about 1952 were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on February 25, 2016 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Three Buildings

The three-storey timber main building has six-mat guest rooms on its upper floors and wooden railings across the east front that recall an old spa town. The three-storey annex between it and the Yusenkaku mixes Western touches into its exterior, with roughcast walls and sash windows. Joined to the south, the two-storey Yusenkaku shows sukiya-style wit in its curious woods, round windows and hexagonal lattice windows (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The three buildings of different periods line the spa street together. Each is described on its own page.
