About the Nikko Kanaya Hotel New Building
The Nikko Kanaya Hotel New Building (日光金谷ホテル新館, Nikkō Kanaya Hoteru Shinkan) is a two-storey timber banquet and guest-room block built in 1904 at the Nikko Kanaya Hotel in Kamihatsuishi-machi, Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, and it became a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on November 10, 2005. It stands northwest of the Main Building, with a column-free hall on the first floor and guest rooms above.
The building measures 18.5 by 8 bays (Ketayuki by Harima) and has a building area of 503 square meters. It is roofed in the hip-and-gable Irimoya-zukuri style with sheet iron, and the outer walls are clad in Shitami-itabari lapped boarding.
Why It Was Registered
The New Building was registered as a structure that would be difficult to reproduce. The feature the Agency for Cultural Affairs singles out is its frame: to keep the first-floor banquet hall free of columns, the second floor is hung by iron rods from the roof Truss. The Agency calls the arrangement unusual.
In an ordinary two-storey building, posts and walls on the ground floor carry the floor above. Here that load was handed up to the roof framing instead, and the upper floor was suspended from it. The result shows how a late-Meiji timber hotel found room for banquets and dances, and it explains why the Nikko Kanaya Hotel New Building was judged hard to build again.
The Hall Beneath a Hanging Floor
According to the hotel, the hall first served as the dining room. It covers about 270 square meters, roughly 13 meters wide and 19 meters deep, under a 3.7-meter ceiling, and the timber floor that has carried many dance parties is said to be the original. Paintings of the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets, a screen of peonies and tigers and a coffered ceiling give the room the look of the worship hall at Nikko Toshogu.
Look at the outside, too. At the level of the second floor, where a belt course runs around the walls, the builders added hanging yoraku ornaments and a balustrade with Giboshi finials, the kind of trim found on temples and shrines. Wrapped around a weatherboarded, Western-looking block, it is a neat summary of the hotel's habit of layering Japanese detail onto Western form.
The date is disputed. The Agency for Cultural Affairs and Tochigi Prefecture give 1904, but the hotel's timeline gives 1901 and says the building then held a large dining room downstairs and 10 guest rooms upstairs. This site follows the Agency's date.
Visiting the New Building
The banquet hall of the Nikko Kanaya Hotel New Building is booked for receptions, meetings and weddings of about 60 to 120 people. It is not open for casual viewing, so the suspended-floor hall can be seen only by attending an event held there. The upstairs rooms are for hotel guests.
From outside, trace the line of the second floor to find the ornaments and balustrade. The hotel does not say how far non-guests may walk around the grounds, so check at the front desk before heading toward the building. Filming and photo shoots need the hotel's prior permission.
