About the Nikko Kanaya Hotel Tenbokaku

The Nikko Kanaya Hotel Tenbokaku (日光金谷ホテル展望閣, Nikkō Kanaya Hoteru Tenbōkaku) is a single-storey timber viewing pavilion built in 1921 on the grounds of the Nikko Kanaya Hotel in Kamihatsuishi-machi, Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, and it became a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on November 10, 2005. It stands on the edge of the bluff north of Kanrantei (Ryugu), to which it is joined by a covered corridor.

Tenbokaku, roughly "pavilion with a view", measures 4.5 by 2 bays with its ridge running east to west. The hip-and-gable Irimoya-zukuri roof is laid in Dōban-buki copper sheet, and the building area is 62 square meters, with a corridor attached.

Why It Was Registered

Tenbokaku was registered as a model of design. The Agency for Cultural Affairs points to its open construction: the sides are left unwalled so nothing blocks the view.

For a small building, the interior is carefully finished. There is no ceiling; the roof structure is left exposed as Keshō-yaneura, and a horizontal Nageshi tie beam runs below the narrow wall panels at head height. Open to the outside on every side, the room is still held together by the lines of the rafters overhead and the beam around it, the vocabulary of a Japanese reception room applied to a lookout.

A Lookout on the Bluff

The Nikko Kanaya Hotel Tenbokaku went up in 1921, five years after the hotel's skating rink opened and in the same year as its neighbor Kanrantei. The hotel calls the pair Ryugu. Where the two-storey Kanrantei faces the rink at its feet, the single-storey Tenbokaku relies on its position at the edge of the bluff to frame the view.

True to its name, the open room sends a seated visitor's gaze straight out to the landscape. Being low, it also sits quietly on the high ground without dominating it. Guests reached it along the corridor from Kanrantei's surrounding lean-to roof, and the two buildings seem to have worked as one continuous place to rest.

The Agency's database and Tochigi Prefecture both date Tenbokaku to 1921 and list a copper roof. One of the hotel's timelines gives sheet iron instead, so the records do not fully agree.

Visiting Tenbokaku

The hotel's website does not mention public access to the Nikko Kanaya Hotel Tenbokaku, and it could not be confirmed if non-guests may walk out to the bluff. If you hope to see it, ask at the front desk. It stands at a cliff edge, so watch your footing if you are allowed near.

Because the pavilion has no walls, anyone standing close by should be able to see the exposed rafters and the head-height beam from outside. Filming and photo shoots require the hotel's prior permission.
