About the Ogawa Family Residence Front Gate

The Ogawa Family Residence Front Gate (小川家住宅表門, Ogawa-ke Jūtaku Omotemon) is a gate of around 1912 facing National Route 4 in Otome 3-chome, Oyama City, Tochigi Prefecture, and it became a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on July 31, 2007. It marks the street front of the compound built by the Ogawa family, the Kurumaya fertilizer wholesalers of Otome Kashi, and it mixes a stone gateway with Western ornament.

The gate stands at the center of the north edge of the plot. A plastered Tsuijibei wall, 10 meters long and turning a corner, runs out on either side, and the opening sits in the middle of it. The Agency for Cultural Affairs database records the gate as stone-built with a tiled roof, 7.3 meters wide, with flanking walls.

Why It Was Registered

The Ogawa Family Residence Front Gate was registered for contributing to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency calls it a gate of fine quality that adopts Western design. Route 4 follows the old Nikko Kaido highway, and this gate was the face the Ogawa family showed to the road after leaving the river.

Of the five buildings, the gate is the only one dated loosely, to around 1912. Oyama City notes that the other four can be tied to a construction date and a master carpenter. The gate probably went up at about the same time as the main house, but no firm record of it has been found.

Granite, Mortar and Western Details

The opening of the Ogawa Family Residence Front Gate is framed in granite and closed with plank doors. The walls are finished in mortar and the roof is laid with Sangawara-buki pantiles. The silhouette is that of a tiled Japanese gate, yet the surfaces are stone and render, with no exposed timber posts or boarding.

Look closer and the Western touches appear. The corners carry quoins that imitate dressed stone blocks, the gable is carved with Western motifs, and a molded Nokijabara cornice runs under the eaves. Oyama City picks out the ornament on the gable wall and describes the whole as a confident blend of Japanese and Western styles.

Standing in front, start with the triangular gable under the roof, then drop to the quoins at the corners of the opening, and finish with the wall bending away on either side. A stone opening set at the center of a long plastered wall was clearly arranged with the view from the street in mind.

The figures do not quite agree. The Agency gives the width as 7.3 meters, while Oyama City's facility summary lists the gate's frontage as 1.19 meters. Neither says what was measured, and this page follows the Agency's figure.

Seeing the Front Gate

Because the Ogawa Family Residence Front Gate faces Route 4, its outer face can be seen from the street at any time. The road is busy, so keep an eye on the traffic if you stop on the pavement.

For the inner side of the Ogawa Family Residence Front Gate and the corner of the wall, go into the grounds during the residence's opening hours: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. from April to September and 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. from October to March, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. We could not find any statement on whether visitors may pass through the gate itself.
