Three Buildings Joined Into One, Dated 1916
The Tsukada History and Legend Museum Office, Shop and Rest Area (塚田歴史伝説館事務室、売店及び休憩所, Tsukada Rekishi Densetsukan Jimushitsu, Baiten oyobi Kyukeijo) is a two-storey structure of 1916 standing at Yamato-cho 2-16 in Tochigi City, Tochigi Prefecture, registered as a Tangible Cultural Property on 18 October 2000 under registration number 09-0050.
The name is unwieldy because the property is not one building in the ordinary sense. Three separate structures were linked together along the eastern boundary of the Tsukada compound, running long from east to west under a continuous roof of sangawara pantiles. The whole covers about 180 square metres. Registration treats the assembly as a single unit of one building.
The date comes from the buildings themselves. An ink inscription found on the timbers, a sumigaki, records construction in 1916, the fifth year of the Taisho era. Written evidence of that kind is worth more than an estimate from style, and it fixes this range a generation later than the storehouse standing to its south.
The Criterion of Being Hard to Recreate
Japan registers Tangible Cultural Properties under one of three criteria. This building was cited for being difficult to recreate, the same criterion applied to the former cargo storehouse in the middle of the compound. The judgement is about method rather than beauty: joining three independent structures into a single working range, keeping the roof coherent while the plan changes beneath it, is carpentry that depended on a labour market and a material supply that no longer exist in the same form.
The result reads well from the yard. Gable ends break the long roofline at intervals, and window openings are placed to give each stretch a different measure, so a building nearly as long as the property is wide never settles into monotony. The interest lies in the joints, at the points where one structure meets the next and the eaves have to be resolved.
Tochigi prospered as a merchant town on the Reiheishi Kaido, the route used by imperial envoys travelling to Nikko, and as a river port on the Uzuma. By 1916 the Tsukada family had been in the timber shipping trade for some seventy years. Adding a substantial working range in that year says something about the scale the household had reached before rail freight displaced the rivers.
The registration was gazetted on 6 November 2000. The property is held by the Tsukada History and Legend Museum Foundation.
The Building You Walk Into First
This range now houses the museum's reception, shop and rest area, which means most visitors pass through it before seeing anything else and rarely register that they are already inside a listed building. Buying a ticket, waiting for the puppet play to begin, sitting down afterwards: all of it happens under the 1916 roof. Look up at the ceiling in the rest area rather than at the merchandise.
The museum opens from 9:30 to 16:00, with last admission at 15:30. It closes on Mondays, moving to Tuesday when a national holiday falls on a Monday, and over the New Year period. Admission is 700 yen for adults and 350 yen for children; groups of ten or more pay 600 yen, and groups of thirty or more pay 500 yen. Holders of a disability certificate are admitted at a reduced rate on presentation of the document.
From Tochigi Station, served by the JR Ryomo Line and the Tobu Nikko Line, the walk takes about ten minutes. Parking on site takes roughly fifteen cars and two coaches, and the Kura-no-machi No. 1 car park is five minutes away on foot. A boat landing for river cruises sits next door, which makes it easy to combine the two in a single visit.
