Important Cultural Property of Tochigi

The Wooden Seated Statue of Dainichi Nyorai with Zushi Cabinet at Kōtokuji Temple in Ashikaga, Tochigi Prefecture, is a small but exquisite Kamakura-period image believed to have been carried in pilgrimage by Ashikaga Yoshikane, founder of the Ashikaga clan. Standing about 32 centimeters tall and now widely attributed to the celebrated sculptor Unkei or his Kei school workshop based on inclusions revealed by X-ray analysis, it was designated a National Important Cultural Property in 1988. The cylindrical lacquered cabinet that houses the figure preserves a complete miniature of the Diamond World mandala. The image is currently held in trust at Tokyo National Museum and appears periodically in special exhibitions.

Hidden in a natural stone cavern in Utsunomiya City, Tochigi, the Ōya Magaibutsu is a remarkable group of ten Buddhist images carved directly into the cliff face of Ōya-ji Temple. Featuring a 4-meter Thousand-Armed Kannon and three Buddhist triads, it became the first cultural property in Japan to be designated both a Special Historic Site and an Important Cultural Property.
