What Is the Takahashi Family Residence Storehouse?

The Takahashi Family Residence Storehouse (高橋家住宅蔵, Takahashi-ke Jūtaku Kura) in Minamiyamicho, Tokushima City, is a tiled Dozo-zukuri storehouse built in the early Meiji period and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on August 23, 1999. It stands on the boundary in the northwest corner of the plot, north of the main house, with a building area of 60 square meters.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as a storehouse used for indigo production. It is entered from one of its long sides, a Hirairi arrangement. As with the west barn, the database's structure field calls it single-storey while the commentary says two storeys.

Why the Storehouse Was Registered

The Takahashi Family Residence Storehouse was registered as a contributor to the historic landscape. The Agency's commentary stresses how closely its overall composition and detailing match the west barn.

The shared features are a high stone base, few and small windows, and boarding on the outside of the lower walls. That indigo buildings in the southwest and northwest corners were built the same way suggests the whole compound was arranged with indigo production in mind.

What to Notice at the Takahashi Storehouse

Look at the boards fixed to the lower half of the walls. On a dozo-zukuri storehouse this skirting probably serves to protect the part of the wall most exposed to dirt and wear, and it splits the elevation into a white upper band and a darker boarded base.

The Takahashi Family Residence Storehouse is long and entered from the side, and it holds down the northwest corner of the property. Seen from the front gate it is the farthest building, beyond the main house, and it marks how deep the compound runs.

Visiting the Takahashi Family Residence Storehouse

The Takahashi Family Residence Storehouse belongs to a private home and its interior is not open. As of October 2026 there were no announced tours or open days.

In the northwest corner and likely hidden behind the main house when seen from the front, it may show only its roof or its north and west walls from outside, though this was not checked on site. If you walk around the property, take care not to stray onto private land.
