Zojuin Temple

Zojuin Temple (蔵珠院) in Kokufucho Shibahara, Tokushima City, on the plain on the right bank of the Yoshino River, has a tea house and a well of the late Edo period registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on October 14, 2021 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency notes that the tea house stands west of the main hall and the well in front of it.

The Two Structures

The tea house is a sukiya building of two wings joined with their ridges at an angle, one with two tea rooms, a preparation room and a waiting room and the other with the upper room; each room has its own character and fine timbers are used lavishly (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It was moved in 2014.

The Maikomi Well is a funnel-shaped pit about 6 metres across at the top and about 3 metres deep, with a spiral path down to a well curb at the bottom and walls of split crystalline schist (Agency for Cultural Affairs), a rare type of well loved locally. Each structure is described on its own page.
