A River-Cobble Wall along the Tamagawa Aqueduct

Tamura Sake Brewery Stone Wall (田村酒造石垣, Tamura Shuzō Ishigaki) is a 145-meter stone wall at Tamura Sake Brewery in Fussa City, Tokyo, built in the late Taisho period (1919 to 1926) and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on December 24, 2013.

The Tamura Sake Brewery Stone Wall lines the east side of the grounds where they face the Tamagawa Aqueduct. It runs the length of the east side, then turns at a right angle (Kaneore) to follow the eastern end of the south side, and there is an entrance in the middle of the east stretch. It is the only one of the brewery's five registrations that is not a building, and the register counts it as one site rather than one building.

Waist-High Cobbles and a Projecting Top Course

The wall is built of rounded river stones, carefully stacked to about waist height. The capstones along the top are set to project slightly beyond the face below, which draws a clean line along the upper edge of an otherwise low wall.

Kept to waist height, it marks the boundary between the waterside and the brewery grounds low but without a break, and the same coursing continues for all 145 meters.

Why the Stone Wall Was Registered

The Tamura Sake Brewery Stone Wall was registered for contributing to the historic landscape of the country, under registration number 13-0312. The Agency for Cultural Affairs credits it with giving order to the brewery's frontage on the Tamagawa Aqueduct.

The grounds meet the aqueduct on the east, and the brewery's own branch channel, drawn from the aqueduct, flows through the property. The Tamura Sake Brewery Stone Wall forms the edge between the two and shapes the outer face of the brewery on the water side.

Seeing the Tamura Sake Brewery Stone Wall

The wall is seen when the brewery's booked tour reaches the east side of the grounds. Near the entrance in the middle of the east side, follow the wall south to the corner where it turns.

Look for the rounded faces of the cobbles and the slight overhang of the capstones. The official pages do not say whether any publicly accessible spot on the aqueduct side gives a view of the whole wall.
