Six Steel Trusses over the Hino River

The Former Hino Bridge (旧日野橋) is a steel truss bridge of 1929 in Kuzumo, Yonago City, Tottori Prefecture, across the Hino River, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on March 18, 2003 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a six-span steel truss bridge, 366 metres long and 5.8 metres wide, with entrance pillars on both banks; registration number 31-0056.

Six Trusses across the Hino River

The Former Hino Bridge is a six-span curved-chord Warren truss bridge where the old National Route 9 crossed the Hino River (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Trusses with vertical members, each spanning 60 metres, rest on concrete piers, and four entrance pillars of cut granite stand at the two ends.

Tottori Prefecture says a timber bridge was first built here in 1888; as it decayed, the prefectural assembly approved its rebuilding in 1926. Work began in June 1927, and the completion ceremony was held on May 19, 1929.

Why It Was Registered

The Agency registered it for its contribution to the historic landscape, noting the curved portal frames with semicircular arches cut out at the end of each truss.

What to Look For

Look for the portal frames with semicircular arches at the end of each truss and the granite entrance pillars (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Visiting

Tottori Prefecture says the bridge was closed after damage in the Western Tottori Earthquake of 2000 and reopened to pedestrians and cyclists after three years of repairs from fiscal 2003. Yonago City committee papers note that it remains closed to cars and that the city is considering its future.
