Flushing Snow Out of the Yard
Wakasa Railway Wakasa Station Snow Drainage Channel (若桜鉄道若桜駅流雪溝, ryūsetsukō) is a concrete water channel built in 1941 in the yard of Wakasa Station, Wakasa Town, Tottori Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 8 July 2008.
Snow cleared from the yard was shovelled into it and carried away on running water. It follows the tracks southeast to northwest for a total of 278 metres within the yard.
The channel is 1.0 metre wide overall and 85 centimetres deep, with a 60-centimetre-wide course for the water.
Why It Was Registered
It is the only one of the Wakasa Railway's registered structures listed on the grounds that it has become a model of its type. The problem of clearing snow from a station yard in heavy-snow country gets a clear answer here: let water carry it away, and build the channel in concrete.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as a structure that shows how railways coped in snowy regions. Built in 1941, about a decade after the line opened, it shows Wakasa being adapted so that it could keep working as a terminus through the winter.

Wakasa Railway Wakasa Station Snow Drainage Channel is a trench in the ground, not a building, so it is easy to miss. In the yard, look down and trace the concrete channel running parallel to the tracks.

The channel runs through the station yard; you cannot step into it or walk along its edge. View it from the area your admission ticket covers. In the snow season its purpose is easiest to imagine.
Wakasa Station's building and waiting room are open to anyone, but the paid part of the yard, where the turntable and water tower stand, needs a yard admission ticket from the window: 300 yen, free for elementary-school children and younger. Follow staff instructions inside and keep off the tracks and any roped-off areas.
