What Is the Yurinso Fourth Storehouse?

The Yurinso Fourth Storehouse (有隣荘四番蔵, Yūrinsō Yonbangura) is a two-story earthen storehouse for household goods, built around 1923 at the west end of the row behind the main house of the Yurinso estate in Kuniyasu, Tottori City, Tottori Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan in 2013.

It measures 6.1 m by 4.1 m, with a building area of 35 square meters, the same as the Second Storehouse at the east end, so the two matching buildings bracket the Third Storehouse between them.

Why the Yurinso Fourth Storehouse Was Registered

The Yurinso Fourth Storehouse was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property, number 31-0179, the last of the three storehouse numbers, together with the other eight structures on the estate, for contributing to the historic landscape of the country.

Tottori Prefecture names the line of red-roofed, namako-walled storehouses at the back of the lot as one of the pieces that make up the estate. The Yurinso Fourth Storehouse closes that line on the west, close to where the annex and the corner room project from the main house.

What to Look for at the Yurinso Fourth Storehouse

Red tile, lattice and board

The Yurinso Fourth Storehouse has a Kirizuma-zukuri gable roof of reddish Sangawara-buki tiles, like its neighbors. Its walls are Shikkui plaster clad in vertical boards, and above the front Geya lean-to the wall turns to Namako-kabe tilework. Red roof, black-and-white grid, plain timber: three colors and textures stacked one above the other make up its front.

The end of the row

All three storehouses run east to west, so their triangular gable ends face east and west. At the Yurinso Fourth Storehouse the west gable stands free, not hidden by a neighbor. Seen from the west, the row should show three gables and three ridgelines receding one behind another.

The household-goods store

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records that this was the kazaigura, the store for household property. Equipment went to the Second Storehouse and clothing to the Third; the Fourth held the family's goods and valuables. Numbering stores by purpose was a practical way for a large household to keep track of what went where. Note that only the Second, Third and Fourth are registered; no building named a First Storehouse is among them.

Visiting the Yurinso Fourth Storehouse

The Yurinso Fourth Storehouse stands behind the main house, and there is no notice of its interior being open (checked October 2, 2026). It is on the opposite side from the dining rooms and the main garden, so if you want to see the exterior, ask when booking a guided option such as the Tea Time Plan.

No photography rule is published. Directions and booking conditions are on the Yurinso page.
