About the Former Uchiyama Family Residence Storehouse

The Former Uchiyama Family Residence Storehouse (旧内山家住宅土蔵, Kyū-Uchiyama-ke Jūtaku Dozō) is a 2-storey Dozo-zukuri earthen-walled storehouse built at the end of the Meiji era at 903 Miyao, Toyama City, Toyama Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 1998.

The Former Uchiyama Family Residence Storehouse stands east of the main house against the estate boundary, running north to south with its entrance on the long side. At 184 m² it is by far the largest storehouse on the estate, and the Yauchō tea room is attached to its south end.

A Storehouse No Wealthy Farmer Could Do Without

The Former Uchiyama Family Residence Storehouse was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls it indispensable to understanding the layout of a wealthy farming household.

It is said to have held rice, bedding and the like. For a landlord family that collected rent in rice, the store where that rice came in must have been at the heart of the household economy.

Four Stores in One Building

Inside, the Former Uchiyama Family Residence Storehouse is divided into four compartments, from south to north: the upper store, the middle store, the lower store and a miso store. Goods were presumably sorted by purpose and value.

Stringing four stores together makes a long building that runs along the eastern boundary, and seen from the east it forms the outline of the estate.
