What Is the Kada Family Residence Torii?

The Kada Family Residence Torii (加田家住宅鳥居, Kada-ke Jūtaku Torii) is a stone shrine gateway in Yabu-no-cho, Wakayama City, Wakayama Prefecture, erected in 1931 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan in 2007.

The Kada Family Residence Torii stands in front of the household shrine in the northeast corner of the lot. It is 2.2 meters high and 1.7 meters wide. Of the nine registered structures at the residence, only the torii and the brick wall are not built of wood.

Why the Kada Family Residence Torii Was Registered

The Kada Family Residence Torii was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property for its contribution to the historic landscape, under registration number 30-0109.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs points to the fine granite and the care with which it was dressed, and to the dignified bearing it gives the shrine of the household deity. It belongs to a private house, yet neither the stone nor the carving was skimped.

What to Look for at the Kada Family Residence Torii

The Kada Family Residence Torii is a shinmei torii. Its round pillars stand perfectly upright, and the top lintel, the kasagi, is long and dead straight. Set it beside the more common Myōjin torii, whose top beam curves up at the ends, and the difference is plain: the shinmei form is drawn only in horizontal and vertical lines.

The stone is mikage, a granite, with carefully finished surfaces. At 2.2 meters it is only a little taller than a person, a scale matched to the small shrine behind it. Together the two mark out the place of worship within the household compound.
