What Is the Kongobuji Temple Imperial Envoy Gate?
The Kongobuji Temple Imperial Envoy Gate (金剛峯寺勅使門, Kongōbu-ji Chokushimon) is a 1933 gate roofed in cypress bark that opens in front of the Okuden guest hall at Kongobuji on Mount Koya in Koya Town, Wakayama Prefecture, and it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 13, 2025.
A chokushimon is, by tradition, the gate reserved for messengers sent by the emperor. This one was built with the Okuden for the 1934 memorial marking 1,100 years since Kobo Daishi entered eternal meditation, under Oura Tokutaro, the engineer who also worked on rebuilding the Kondo and the Konpon Daito.
An 81-meter wall runs east and west from the gate, closing the south side of the Banryutei rock garden that surrounds the Okuden.
Why the Kongobuji Chokushimon Was Registered
It was registered as a model of architectural form. The gate is a one-bay hira-karamon: a karamon gate whose curved cusped gables appear on the sides while the front shows the long, straight eave. The roof is Hiwadabuki cypress bark and the opening is 3.5 meters wide.
The main posts are round; the rear support posts are square with broad chamfers, and the two are tied by lower and upper tie beams and a cantilevered beam. The rafters are single and widely spaced. The Agency for Cultural Affairs singles out the way the ridge beam is carried by a Kaerumata strut together with the rafters.
The doorway holds delicate latticed panel doors, and the temple crest decorates the transom. Deep gable overhangs give the whole Kongobuji Temple Imperial Envoy Gate a graceful profile.
Highlights of the Kongobuji Envoy Gate
Walk to the side to see the gable. The thick cypress-bark roof curves at its edges into soft shadow, and the overhang reaches well beyond the frame. The Agency even chose the east gable for its record photograph.
From the front, look for the crest in the transom and the finely spaced lattice of the doors, which look light even when shut.
Note the two kinds of post. Round main posts signal rank, while square rear posts step back visually, an old convention for telling principal supports from secondary ones.
Visiting the Kongobuji Temple Imperial Envoy Gate
The Kongobuji Temple Imperial Envoy Gate stands at the southern edge of Banryutei, facing the Okuden. It is not a gate visitors pass through. From the Kongobuji visitor route you see its roof and the long wall across the garden.
Indoor photography is prohibited, but Banryutei may be photographed.
