What Is the Kongobuji Temple Reception Room?
The Kongobuji Temple Reception Room (金剛峯寺応接室, Kongōbu-ji Ōsetsushitsu) is a small reception building on the west side of Kongobuji on Mount Koya in Koya Town, Wakayama Prefecture, built in 1933 as the bathhouse of the temple's guest house and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 13, 2025.
Its full registered name, Kongobuji Temple Reception Room (Former Guest House Bathhouse), records that history. The Agency for Cultural Affairs states that around 1957 the building was moved by hikiya, sliding the whole structure to a new spot without dismantling it, and then refitted as a reception room.
The Reception Room now stands northeast of the Okuden (the former guest house) and is tied to the Okuden and the Annex by a covered corridor. Kongobuji groups it with the New Shoin and the Shinshoan tea house as buildings prepared for the 1965 ceremonies marking 1,150 years since Koyasan was founded.
Why the Kongobuji Reception Room Was Registered
It was registered as a model of architectural form. The single-storey timber building has a copper-clad Kirizuma-zukuri gable roof and a building area of just 52 m². A veranda runs around all four sides, with extra eaves added on the west and east.
The eave purlins sit directly on the post tops, under a single layer of widely spaced rafters. The gable ends use inokosasu, a pair of inclined members meeting at the ridge like hands pressed together. Inside is one board-floored room with a Saobuchi-tenjō ceiling and an alcove on the east wall.
The Agency's assessment rests on how a service building was turned into a room fit for the Okuden's guests, and on the part it now plays in the garden setting beside the Okuden.
Highlights of the Kongobuji Temple Reception Room
Look at the gables. Inokosasu is an ancient form that shows structure rather than ornament, and on this small roof its two bare lines leave the copper and white wall to speak for themselves.
The alcove is placed on the east so that a seated guest faces out toward the rock garden. Even in a single room, the refit was organized around where the visitor sits and what they see.
Position matters as well. Linked by the corridor, the Okuden, the Annex and the Kongobuji Reception Room work as one reception complex rather than three separate buildings.
