What Is the Kongobuji Temple Okunoin Sutra Repository?

The Kongobuji Temple Okunoin Sutra Repository (金剛峯寺奥院経蔵, Kongōbu-ji Okunoin Kyōzō) is a sutra storehouse built in 1599 just southeast of Kobo Daishi's mausoleum in the Okunoin area of Mount Koya, Koya Town, Wakayama Prefecture, and it was designated an Important Cultural Property on April 13, 1922. The characters 奥院 are read "Okunoin."

Okunoin grew up around the mausoleum of Kukai (Kobo Daishi), who entered eternal meditation in 835, and it is the holiest ground on the mountain. The approach of about 2 kilometers from Ichinohashi bridge to the Toro-do lantern hall is lined, under giant cedars, with what are said to be more than 200,000 graves and memorials. The repository stands at the very end of that path, close to the mausoleum.

A plaque over its front records that Ishida Mitsunari built the repository in 1599 and donated a complete Buddhist canon printed in Korea. Mitsunari was one of the five commissioners of the Toyotomi government, and 1599 was the year before the Battle of Sekigahara.

Why the Okunoin Sutra Repository Is an Important Cultural Property

Part of its value is that the date and the donor are confirmed by an inscription on the building itself, so the origins of this Momoyama-period structure do not rest on legend.

It is a square Hōgyō-zukuri building, three bays on each side, roofed in cypress bark. Inside is an octagonal revolving bookcase, a rinzo, with an image of Monju (Manjushri) riding a lion facing the front as the principal image. The rinzo once held the full canon of 6,285 volumes.

According to the prefectural description, the entire interior, including the rinzo, is painted, and together with carved Kibana beam ends it shows the character of the Momoyama period. The restrained bark roof covers a richly decorated room.

The Kongobuji Temple Okunoin Sutra Repository has now been protected for more than a century, and the Koyasan Cultural Properties Preservation Association manages it.

What to Notice at the Okunoin Sutra Repository

A rinzo is a bookcase that turns, shelves and all. Rotating it once is said to bring the same merit as reading the entire canon, a way of housing an enormous library while also opening it to devotion.

From outside, look for the carved beam ends under the eaves and the plaque on the front. That inscription is the key document for the building's history.

The repository sits southeast of the mausoleum near the Toro-do, beneath tall cedars. A small three-bay hall with a low pyramidal roof, it blends quietly into the sacred grounds it serves.

Visiting the Kongobuji Temple Okunoin Sutra Repository

The Kongobuji Temple Okunoin Sutra Repository lies in the sanctuary beyond Gobyo-bashi bridge. Kongobuji prohibits all photography from the bridge to the Toro-do and the mausoleum, and the repository is inside that zone.

The interior is not open, and no admission for it appears in Kongobuji's fee schedule. Visitors see the exterior from the path.

A formal pilgrimage begins at Ichinohashi, about 2 kilometers from the mausoleum. Beyond Gobyo-bashi, walk quietly and avoid lingering in front of the repository so as not to block other worshippers.
