About the Kusumoto Family Residence Storehouse
The Kusumoto Family Residence Storehouse (楠本家住宅土蔵, Kusumoto-ke Jūtaku Dozō) is a 2-story Dozo-zukuri storehouse from the beginning of the Meiji period standing southeast of the detached room on the Kusumoto Family Residence estate in Shimizu, Hashimoto City, Wakayama Prefecture, and it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2005.
Its ridge runs north to south, and it measures 3.5 Ken along the ridge (Ketayuki) by 2 ken across (Harima). The roof is a plain gable (Kirizuma-zukuri) of Sangawara-buki pantiles, with the entrance in a gable end, the Tsumairi arrangement. At 27 square meters, it is the smallest of the four registered Kusumoto buildings.
Why the Kusumoto Storehouse was registered
The Kusumoto Family Residence Storehouse was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls it an indispensable part of the estate.
If the main house on the road is the public face of the estate, the storehouse is where a household kept what it valued, out at the back. Small as it is, the Kusumoto storehouse is counted as one of the four buildings that together give the old family estate its complete form.
What to look for at the Kusumoto Storehouse
The entrance to the Kusumoto Family Residence Storehouse is toward the west side of the north gable wall. The opening has a raised frame around it and is closed by a single heavy sliding door, the type known as an ōdo used on storehouses.
On the upper floor, small windows open in the west and south walls. Storehouses are generally built with few, small openings, since those are where fire can get in. The agency lists only the doorway and these two upper windows.
Note which way the door faces. To the north are the detached room and the main house, so the door appears to be turned toward the front of the estate.
