According to Wakayama Prefecture, Misoya began making miso in Hashimoto in 1495 and opened as a kimono merchant under the shop name Misoya in 1865.

The Three Properties

The main house faces south onto the Ise Kaido, with roofs laid in a U shape around a courtyard in its west half; its gently curved roof and lattice-like upper windows create the look of a Kyoto townhouse (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Behind it stands a building that joins the Kamigura, a gable-entry tool store with double clay doors bearing the shop mark, to a sukiya-style detached room on the west. Further west, the Shimogura is a small storehouse once used for miso or tools, carefully made with rafters plastered over in waves (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Each property is described on its own page.
