Hundreds of dark veins on a tidal rock platform
When the tide drops along the western shore of the Torinosu Peninsula in Tanabe, a low rocky platform comes into view, crossed by hundreds of narrow dark bands. They look almost as if someone had drawn ink lines across the pale sandstone. Each band is a vein of black mudstone that was squeezed up through cracks in the surrounding rock around 15 million years ago, when a powerful earthquake shook the seabed and turned soft, water-laden mud into a flowing slurry. Because formations like this preserve the moment of a violent seismic event, geologists sometimes describe them as the fossil of a giant earthquake.
The site sits on a small peninsula reaching north into Tanabe Bay, close to the boundary between Tanabe City and the resort town of Shirahama. It was designated a National Natural Monument in 1936, and it remains one of the clearest places in Japan to read a buried earthquake directly in the rock at your feet.
How the dikes formed
The pale rock of the platform belongs to the Tanabe Group, a sequence of sandstone deposited on a shallow Miocene sea floor during the Tertiary period. Beneath the western coast of the peninsula, geologists infer a left-lateral strike-slip fault that bends eastward near the northern shore and changes into a thrust fault. Movement along these faults produced earthquakes, and the shaking opened many cracks in the overlying sandstone.
Below that sandstone lay a layer of soft, water-saturated mud containing scattered pebbles. The seismic shaking liquefied it. Under pressure, the mud was forced upward into the fresh cracks, where it later hardened into the firm, dark, gravel-bearing mudstone visible today. This is a clastic dike, also called a sedimentary dike. It is fundamentally different from the more familiar igneous dike, which forms when molten magma fills a fracture and cools. Here the filling material was cold liquefied sediment, not lava.
Sedimentary dikes of mudstone and sandstone occur widely across Japan, but rarely at this scale or clarity. The Torinosu exposures let you trace the cause and effect of a single geological process from start to finish.
Why it earned national protection
The mudstone dikes were designated a National Natural Monument on September 3, 1936, under three of the standard criteria for geological monuments: the occurrence of rocks, minerals and fossils; rock structure; and phenomena of weathering and erosion.
The deciding factor was scale. The dike swarm stretches more than 1.5 kilometers in a north-northeast direction, in a band roughly 200 to 300 meters wide, and surveys have counted upward of 500 separate dikes across the wave-cut platform and the sea cliff behind it. This makes it the largest clastic dike swarm in Japan.
Rarity adds to its value. Of the twenty-some rock dikes designated as National Natural Monuments nationwide, almost all are igneous, formed from volcanic material. Only two are mudstone dikes: this one and the smaller site at nearby Shirahama. Seeing a sedimentary dike field of this size and quality is unusual anywhere in the country.
What to look for on the rocks
The dikes are easiest to read at low tide, when the platform is fully exposed and dry enough to walk on with care. A stone marker recording the national designation stands on the rocky shore and makes a useful reference point.
Crossing patterns
Look at how the veins run. Most follow a northeast-to-southwest line, but a good number run north to south, and where the two directions meet they cut across one another. The intersections reveal which dike formed first and record more than one episode of cracking and injection.
Ridges and grooves
The mudstone and the surrounding sandstone do not weather at the same rate. Where the dike rock is harder than the sandstone, the vein stands up as a low wall or ridge above the platform. Where it is softer, the sea has worn it into a shallow groove, and in some places dike and sandstone wear down level with each other. Running a hand along a raised vein, you can feel the grain change from one rock type to the next.
Scale of the veins
Individual dikes range from about a centimeter to several tens of centimeters across, and some can be followed horizontally for more than 100 meters. The original 1936 survey recorded a few exceptionally wide examples exceeding two meters. The contrast between hair-thin seams and broad bands within the same outcrop is part of what makes the site rewarding to walk slowly.
Visiting
Timing matters more here than at most sites. Check a local tide table and aim to arrive in the hour or two around low tide, when the dikes on the foreshore are uncovered. At high water much of the platform is submerged. The rocks are uneven and can be slippery with seaweed, so sturdy, grippy footwear is sensible, and it is best to keep an eye on the returning tide.
By car, the site is about 20 minutes from the Tanabe or Kamitonda interchange on the Kisei Expressway. By public transport, take a Meiko bus bound for Shirahama Onsen from Kii-Tanabe Station on the JR Kisei Main Line, ride about 15 minutes to the Uchinoura stop, then walk roughly 15 minutes. There are no ticket gates or opening hours; the shore is open, and visitors are asked not to remove or damage the rock.
Nearby
Just offshore from the dike field lies Kashima, a small wooded island that is itself a National Natural Monument. The naturalist and folklorist Minakata Kumagusu valued Kashima as a haven of plant and animal life and campaigned for its protection in the early twentieth century. The island is also one of the viewpoints that make up the Minakata Mandala scenic area, a designated Place of Scenic Beauty.
