What the Nakasuji Family Residence Nagayamon Gate Is

The Nakasuji Family Residence Nagayamon Gate (中筋家住宅長屋門, Nakasuji-ke Jūtaku Nagaya-mon) is a Nagayamon gatehouse on the east side of the Nakasuji family estate, facing the prefectural road in the Wasa district of Negi, Wakayama City, Wakayama Prefecture; it was built around 1887 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 11 December 1998. It is a single-storey timber building under a Sangawara-buki pantiled roof, with a building area of 50 square metres.

A nagayamon is a gate built into a long range of rooms or stores, so that gate and outbuilding form a single structure. In the Edo period it was the formal frontage of samurai houses and of leading village families. Here a store is attached on the north side under a roof one step lower, and gate and store read as one continuous front along the road.

The main house lies behind the gate, which serves as the estate's front entrance. Beyond the store to the north comes the utility building, so the whole east side of the property is closed off by these three structures.

Why It Was Registered

The Nakasuji Family Residence Nagayamon Gate was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that, seen from the road, the gate and its store share one design, with ōkabe walls and a Shitami-itabari clapboard base, and calls it a front worthy of one of the largest household compounds in Wasa.

Ōkabe construction buries the posts inside the plaster so that none of the frame shows. Compared with walls that expose the posts, the surface runs flat and unbroken and looks heavier. Below it, overlapping horizontal boards protect the plaster from rain splashing up off the ground. Plaster above and boards below: the two-tier finish runs without a break from the gate to the end of the store.

By carrying that finish across the store as well, the builders made gate and store almost indistinguishable from the road. The job of a nagayamon is to present a family's standing to the street, and here that front was stretched well beyond the length of the gate itself.

What to Look For

Walk along the prefectural road from south to north. First comes the roof of the Nakasuji Family Residence Nagayamon Gate, then the roof drops a step over the store. Past a service entrance, the utility building's roof sits slightly lower again. Three roofs, each a little below the last, make up the east side of the estate.

Watch the walls, too. The boarded base meets the white plaster along a horizontal line that runs straight from the gate to the store. The roofs change height, but because that line stays level, separate buildings read as one continuous wall.

Visiting

The gatehouse is part of a private home, and the area inside the gate and the grounds are closed (checked 26 September 2026). The front facing the prefectural road can be seen from the public road.

Cars use the road, so take care when you stop to look, and please do not point a camera through the gate.
