A Quiet Reception Wing
The Oka Family Residence Heya Annex (岡家住宅部屋) is a detached reception wing of the late Meiji era (1898 to 1912) in Nyugo, Kudoyama Town, Ito District, Wakayama Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on September 10, 2019 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records a single-storey timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of 60 square metres; registration number 30-0263.
An Annex West of the Main House
The Oka Family Residence Heya Annex stands in front of the west side of the main house and is reached from it by a covered passage (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Within the homestead it occupies the southwest corner (Wakayama Prefecture). Heya simply means "room", but here it names a detached suite for receiving guests.
It is a single-storey building under a pantiled hip-and-gable roof running north to south, with lean-to roofs all round and smooth plastered walls above them. Inside are two 8-mat tatami rooms set end to end, north and south, with a veranda on the east, south and north sides (Agency for Cultural Affairs; Wakayama Prefecture).
Why It Was Registered
The Agency describes a calm, restrained guest wing that contrasts with the heavy main house, and registered it for its contribution to the historic landscape. Wakayama Prefecture also praises the quality of its design.
What to Look For
The decorative alcove arrangement on the west wall of the south room is the highlight; the Agency calls its design delicate. The verandas on three sides open the pair of rooms to the garden.
Next to the massive main house, the low hip-and-gable roof and white plastered walls of the Oka Family Residence Heya Annex look light and composed.
