The Great House at the Top of Nyugo

The Oka Family Residence Main House (岡家住宅主屋) is a large farmhouse of 1871 in Nyugo, Kudoyama Town, Ito District, Wakayama Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on September 10, 2019 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a single-storey timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of 112 square metres, renovated in 1995; registration number 30-0262.

A Big Roof with an Attic Storey

The Oka Family Residence Main House stands facing south at the top of Nyugo, a hamlet on the south bank of the middle Kinokawa (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It occupies the centre of the homestead and was built in 1871, the same year as the gatehouse (Wakayama Prefecture).

The roof does most of the talking. It is a tall hip-and-gable roof of pantiles over a tsushi-nikai, a low attic storey tucked under the eaves, with lean-to roofs running all the way round. On top of the main ridge sits a second, smaller roof of traditional round-and-flat tiles, a raised ridge vent called a koshi-yane (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Inside, an earth-floored work area takes the east side, and the living rooms are laid out four to a block in the west. A formal shikidai entrance step fronts one row of rooms, giving the house a reception front fit for visitors (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The prefecture notes that the alcove area keeps an old arrangement, with only a toko alcove and a Buddhist altar.

Why It Was Registered

The Agency describes a large farmhouse whose massive, high-set roof gives it a commanding presence in the village, and registered it for its contribution to the historic landscape.

Wakayama Prefecture rates it as a large farmhouse of high quality. As the home of a family that managed one of Mount Koya's estates, it keeps a formal shikidai entrance and a sense of rank.

What to Look For

Look up at the koshi-yane on the ridge. According to Wakayama Prefecture it resembles a smoke vent, though its purpose is unclear, and family tradition holds that the household's fortunes would decline if it were ever removed.

The lean-to roofs wrapping the walls, set low beneath the great roof and attic storey, add to the bulk of the Oka Family Residence Main House (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Visiting

The Oka Family Residence Main House is a family home, and no official information on interior visits could be found. The Agency's database and the Wakayama Prefecture cultural properties site carry exterior photographs supplied by the Kudoyama Town Board of Education.
