A Guest Wing beside the Farmhouse
The Okamoto Family Residence Annex (岡本家住宅離れ) is a detached annex of about 1965 in Kuju, Koyaguchi-cho, Hashimoto City, Wakayama Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on March 6, 2024 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records a single-storey timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of 32 square metres; registration number 30-0351.
An Annex Joined to the Main House
The Okamoto Family Residence Annex stands west of the main house: a single-storey building with a gabled roof of pantiles and a lean-to on the east, joined to the main house by a covered passage at its northeast corner (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
Inside are two reception rooms in a row. The southern room has a tokonoma alcove and a flat shoin window, a veranda runs along the east side, and the transom between the rooms is filled with a pierced, carved panel (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Wakayama Prefecture dates it to about 1965.
Why It Was Registered
The Agency registered the annex for its contribution to the historic landscape: together with the main house it encloses the south garden and shapes the scene within the property.
What to Look For
Look for the pierced transom and the southern room with its alcove and flat shoin window (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Set beside the plain reception room of the main house, which has only a tsuke-shoin, the Okamoto annex is the more decorated of the two.
Notice too how the main house and the annex wrap round the south garden, linked by the covered passage, so that a mid-20th-century wing was folded into an Edo-period household.
Visiting
The Okamoto Family Residence Annex is part of a private home, and no official information on interior access or visits was found. Please do not enter the property. The Agency's database and Cultural Heritage Online carry a photograph of the annex from the front.
