A Plastered Storehouse of 1962

The Okamoto Family Residence Storehouse (岡本家住宅土蔵) is a storehouse for household goods of 1962 in Kuju, Koyaguchi-cho, Hashimoto City, Wakayama Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on March 6, 2024 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a two-storey earthen-walled storehouse with a tiled roof and a building area of 40 square metres; registration number 30-0352.

A Storehouse Northwest of the Main House

The Okamoto Family Residence Storehouse stands northwest of the main house and was built to hold the family's household goods (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It is a two-storey kura entered from the long side, under a gabled roof of pantiles built as an oki-yane, a separate roof set over the earthen walls, with a lower-ridged extension to the north and a lean-to on the east.

The walls are finished in plaster, with two windows on the west side (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Each floor is a single room with plank flooring, and the stair is at the north end.

Why It Was Registered

The Agency registered the storehouse for its contribution to the historic landscape, noting that its solid exterior works with the main house to give the property its historic character. Wakayama Prefecture also singles out its weighty appearance.

What to Look For

Look for the white plaster walls and the oki-yane roof that seems to hover above them (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Although the Okamoto storehouse dates from 1962, it keeps the traditional form of an earthen-walled kura.

The lower extension to the north and the lean-to on the east give the two-storey block a stepped outline.

Visiting

The Okamoto Family Residence Storehouse is part of a private home, and no official information on interior access or visits was found. Please do not enter the property. The Agency's database and Cultural Heritage Online carry a photograph of the storehouse from the front and side.
