Tokoji Temple, Kitayama
Tokoji Temple (東光寺) is a temple in Takehara, Kitayama Village, Wakayama; its main hall of 1847 and gate of 1861 were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on April 25, 2014 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Main Hall and Gate
The main hall faces east under a gabled roof with its entrance on the long side, joining a hojo-type hall with living quarters. Plain outside, it has a fine interior centred on a zelkova inner sanctum, and both gables are boarded in a local style called ganki (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
On the east front of the hall stands the gate, a four-legged gate with its ridge posts set slightly forward like a yakuimon, its gable struts carrying large carved oigata ornaments that set off the temple front (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Each building is described on its own page.
