A Storehouse of 1910 behind the Gun Shop
The Ichijima Family Residence Storehouse (市島家住宅蔵) is a two-storey earthen-walled storehouse built in 1910 behind the Ichijima gun and gunpowder shop at Nanokamachi, Yamagata City, Yamagata Prefecture, and was registered with the shop as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on November 20, 2001. Its date is known from a ridge tag (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as two storeys, earthen-walled, with a galvanised copper roof and a building area of 62 square metres; registration number 06-0041. Yamagata Prefecture lists the owner as a private individual.
A Merchant Family's Storehouse
According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the Ichijima family has dealt in gunpowder since the Edo period; its 1927 concrete shop faces the street, with this storehouse behind.
Inside, the ground floor is a sukiya-style tatami room and the upper floor a store (Agency for Cultural Affairs), so the building served as a reception room as well as for storage.
Why It Was Registered
The Ichijima Family Residence Storehouse was registered as a building that has become a model of design. The Agency for Cultural Affairs praises its heavy plastered walls and careful details such as the beam mouldings over the openings and double doors.
What to Look For
The Ichijima Family Residence Storehouse is a two-storey storehouse under a gabled sheet-metal roof running east to west, entered on the long side (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
Its walls are thickly plastered, with beam mouldings over the openings and heavy double doors (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Yamagata Prefecture describes it as a two-storey plastered storehouse at the back of the site.
