A Small Gate with Formal Manners
The Kazama Family Former Villa Muryokoen Front Gate (風間家旧別邸無量光苑表門, Omotemon) is a Yakuimon-style gate of about 1910 on the south side of the Muryokoen villa in Izumimachi, Tsuruoka, Yamagata Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 1 July 2003. It is tiled, 2.1 metres wide, and flanked by short wing walls.
The gate stands at the east end of the south side of the lot, facing the street. Heishindo, the Kazama family's main house, lies across the road to the south, and this was the formal entrance by which guests arrived at the villa.
In a yakuimon the main posts stand forward of the gate's centre line, with rear posts behind them carrying a gabled roof. Here the square main posts support a heavy crossbeam, the kabuki, which in turn carries a second beam, the otokobari, beneath a roof of moderately spaced rafters.
Why It Was Registered
The Kazama Family Former Villa Muryokoen Front Gate was registered, as number 06-0054, for its contribution to the historic townscape.
The official description calls it small but finely made, with the dignity a front gate requires. At 2.1 metres wide it is modest beside the gates of samurai houses, yet the stacked crossbeam and upper beam, and the neatly spaced rafters under the eaves, give it real presence.
The ridge carries the other mark of rank: ornamental tiles shaped like shachi, the mythical fish that guard castle roofs against fire. On a house gate they are a showy touch.
What to Look For
From the front, the wing walls splay outward on each side in a shallow V. They are clad in sasara-ko shitami, overlapping horizontal boards held by notched vertical battens, and capped with yamato-buki, boards laid alternately over and under. Because the walls fan out, the little gate reads as a much deeper entrance than it is.
Then look up at the ridge. The fish-shaped ridge tiles are large for a gate this size, and alongside the thick crossbeam they show how the builders expressed status within tight dimensions.
The best view is from the far side of the street, where the angle of the wing walls and the line of the roof come together.
Visiting the Front Gate
The Kazama Family Former Villa Muryokoen Front Gate faces the street on the south side of the grounds, so its exterior can be seen from the road at any time. To see the inner face and the rear posts you need to enter the villa during the open season.
The whole roof and its ornaments fit into view from the opposite side of the street. Keep off the roadway while you look.
